Create a Modern Blog Design

Monday, May 24th, 2010

The template or theme that you choose for your online journal has to walk a fine line. It needs to show your personality but it also needs to have mass appeal. It needs to stand out while being business appropriate. It needs to be different while not being over the top, ugly or even hurting your visitor’s eyes. A modern blog design bridges all of these gaps. It can work for many different types of blogs and niches.

One of the current trends is for a magazine or newspaper theme. These themes will feature several stories on the front page and then you just have to click a link to read the rest of the article. These themes often don’t include sidebars so it might not be the perfect look for monetization. Some paid blogging companies don’t allow the use of the “more” tag on their posts.

The sky is the limit when it comes to colors on a modern blog design. You’ll want to choose a neutral background for the main body of the template such as white, gray or black so that visitors can actually read your posts without eye strain. You can use bright colors like orange sparingly so it’s eye catching without being too much. If a color is popular in the fashion or decorating world, such as chocolate brown, then it’s probably going to end up being popular in the blogging world.

The portfolio theme is another common template in contemporary design. These themes will focus on photo galleries on the front page instead of written content. Keep in mind that the search engines favor words instead of pictures so you’ll need to add some text describing your pictures if you want to drive search engine traffic.

You need to firmly have the purpose of your blog in mind before choosing a template. If you want a blog for seo purposes then you’ll need a template which loads quickly. This may mean that you’ll need to cut down on extensive graphics. Simple themes don’t have to be boring. It gives you the opportunity to have the focus on your content and ads instead of an intricate design that may detract from the purpose of your blog.

There are a few prevalent design styles in the blogging world. You’ll want to use these sparingly because they are seen all over the place. However if it speaks to your design direction and overall aesthetic it might be worth a shot. A grunge theme probably works better for a personal blog because of the distressed nature. You might be able to work a few paint spatters and worn graphics into a business design. The other really prevalent template is the design of a notebook complete with torn paper edges. Again this is more of a look for a personal blog. These are generic designs that won’t really speak to your company’s mission.

Modern blog design is clean without being boring. The focus is on the content but it still has a defined direction. You can create your own contemporary template yourself or use a free template. You may even want to talk to a web designer for a piece that is truly a work of art but is also customized to your business.

Five Profitable Blog Design Tips to Capture and Retain Your Blog Visitors’ Attention

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Do you know the impact that a blog design has on the length of time that visitors spend at your blog? For a blog to be profitable, other than looking attractive, it needs to be designed in a way that allows your blog content to capture and retain your readers’ attention.

Besides getting more visitors to come to your blog, you also want your blog visitors to spend as much time at your blog as possible, clicking on your blog ads and reading about the products and services that you are promoting.

Blog Design is Important – Don’t Underestimate It!

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Blogs have now overtaken static web sites in popularity. Blogs originally started as a platform for people to put down their thoughts and what they were doing at the time, a sort of public diary. Then companies started to use blogs as a means of informing their customers on product updates.

Now, blogs have become mainstream, and an essential part of internet marketing. This is because setting up a blog is so much easier than setting up a static web site. Applications like WordPress mean that knowledge of HTML is not required, and site designs and content are now easy to install, with the advent of themes and widgets.

Because blogs are more dynamic than sites, people will keep returning, if the blog is interesting enough. If the webmaster never updates his site there is no incentive for a visitor to return.

If a blog gets a steady following, they provide a great way of marketing a product, and an income from ads placed on the blog, such as AdSense and other companies’ ads.

You can increase your blog traffic by joining affiliate programs and site directories, which will list your blog in a certain category. You can also put relevant comments on popular blogs, always including a link back to your own blog in your signature.

You can get people to keep coming back to your blog by having continually changing interesting or amusing content, together with a good layout and design. If you don’t write your own content you can download other peoples’ articles and publish them on your own blog, as long as you keep the original author’s bio box intact.

The blog’s layout and design are almost as important as the content. Your blog has to remain attractive enough that your blog will stand out from the millions of other blogs using free standard templates.

* Get a custom header

You will see a lot of blogs with generic designs downloaded from sites which give away free header templates.

You should personalize your own header by having distinctive graphics or logos. If you know Photoshop or Gimp you can edit the free graphics so that they become exclusive to your blog. You can also get professional looking graphics done for you if you do a search online.

* Use your own photos

People love seeing pictures. A photo of you makes the blog appear more human and friendly.

* Include RSS feeds in your blog.

These let your followers know that there is a new posting on your blog. Tutorials on how to set up RSS feeds are available everywhere on the net.

* Add audio

Audio personalizes your blog; and if it changes, it can keep your visitors coming back. Just make sure that the audio doesn’t start automatically. People may be reading your blog at work and forget that they have the volume turned up. If you can’t record an audio track of yourself you could try streaming radio stations, or a favourite mp3 file. Just don’t make it too intrusive – you want people reading your blog, not listening to music.

If you use these tips, keep your content ever changing and relevant, and you get some traffic, you should definitely have a popular blog, one that stands out from all the others.

Blog Design Ideas

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Blogs have increased popularity over this past months. Many people have started to create their personal blogs to express their thoughts and feelings. Internet companies have also started their blogs to inform consumers on the latest product news and reviews.

Because of this, blogs are also being used as internet marketing media. Before, internet marketing is done by placing banners and links on popular websites, such as news and information sites. Links were also included on newsletters and marketing letters sent to the members of their mailing lists. Many people spend time reading blogs. People read their friend’s blogs, their favorite author’s blogs, blogs on topics that they are interested in, and blogs on product reviews. With the increasing popularity of blogging, it is even feared that people rely on blogs to get the latest news.

While getting news reports from blogs isn’t reliable, some people look for product reviews through blogs. In some cases, this is more dependable. While it is true that some media persons are being paid to write good reviews about a certain product, blog writers write about their actual experiences on products and services from a company. Since there are many people who read and start their own blogs, blogs are a good medium to market a product. With the increasing blog traffic means increase in product sales.

Blog traffic can be increased by joining affiliate programs and sites, which will list your blog under a certain search category or name. You can also have your blog advertised in popular websites. This, however, will cost some money and is not advisable if you have just started blogging. A writer who has just launched his/her blog will want as much traffic as possible to increase advertisements on the site. Also, some advertisers pay every time their link is clicked or the page that has their link is viewed.

When you have increased traffic on your blog, you should try to keep you visitors coming back and recommending your blog to friends and colleagues. This can be done by having informative or amusing content and good blog layout and design. You may develop your blog’s content or you can also acquire the services of a web content writer to provide you with the blog articles.

The blog’s layout and design also plays a big role. While most of the companies offering free blog hosting offer pre-selected templates, there are also some that allows customization that if you utilize this feature correctly can increase your blog’s traffic.

Here are a few tips to make your blog stand out from the millions of blogs out there that have standard designs.

* Customize the banner

The banner usually has the most generic designs that are common to the blogs from a blogging company or service. You can personalize this banner by having a graphic with the dimensions of the banner. You can also edit the graphic so that it will also include the title of your blog. In this case, you can create your own graphic or you can purchase professional looking graphics online for less than $10.

* Personalizing photos

Of course, most of the photos that you will be posting will be your own. However, if you don’t customize the photos before posting them, you may miss maximizing the enhancing benefits graphics can add to the page. Adding photo borders can help the photo stand out from the page. It can also add to the design of your blog. You can choose a standard border or you can also create your own border which can be associated with your blog’s templates.

* Add a favicon

Don’t you think sites with icons on the address bar before the website’s URL are cool? Many people do. These favicons add a professional look to the URL. These easy to do using photo or graphic editing softwares.

* Check out blog templates, layouts, backgrounds, textures and skins from sites

There are sites that offer free blog templates, layouts, backgrounds, textures and skins. You can make use of these so your blog will not look generic like most of the blogs hosted by the service provider.

* Include RSS feeds

This is a cool way to inform people with newsreaders about your blog headlines. Tutorials on RSS feeds are available on the internet.

* Audio makes your blog more personal

Not only does audio personalizes the blog; it can also keep your visitors coming back. You can try having streaming radio stations, mp3 file or playlists loading with your blog.

* Advertisements

If you have signed-up with Google Ad-Sense, which I am sure you would like to do, make sure that the ads are conveniently placed that these will not hinder your readers’ ease in accessing the information on your blog.

Try using these tips and you can definitely increase and retain traffic on your blog.

Blog Design – 3 Ways to Redesign Your Blog

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Does your blog have an outdated design? Does your current design look unattractive? Do you want to attract and retain your visitors?

If you have an outdated or unattractive design for your blog it may turn off your visitors. Website owners often fall in love with their own design without seeing it from their visitor’s viewpoint. Ask several of your friends to evaluate your current blog design by asking for their honest opinions. Alternatively visit Web site design forums and ask for a free evaluation.

3 ways to redesign your blog

1. Customize your current blog

Instead of investing a lot of time and money by starting from scratch customize your current design a little to give it a new look. Here are two simple WordPress customizations that will give your blog an attractive new design:

Select a new theme

Google “free WordPress themes” Scroll through the list of themes and choose one that will suit your business Download the themes file to your desktop Unzip the files using Winzip or other software Upload the folder to the themes folder on the server (wp-content-themes) Log in to your administration panel and click on settings — Appearance Select your new theme then save it Refresh the web page to view your new theme

Change the heading banner

Design a new banner in your favorite graphics software (e.g. Photoshop, Fireworks) Right-click on your current header image then select properties to find the name of the banner Name your new banner the same as the old one then save it on your desktop Upload the new banner to replace the old one on the server Refresh your web page to view the new banner

2. Purchase a premium WordPress design template

Why purchase a premium design template when you can easily install a free theme?

Premium themes contain clean code, are optimized for the search engines plus you receive professional technical support should you have problems with installation or customization. It also saves you time looking through hundreds of free themes not knowing what’s in the code or if the theme will be updated. Theme developers invest lots of time to make sure the designs look professional. This allows you to easily upgrade your current design with a professional theme for your business.

3. Hire a professional Web designer

A professional web designer will create a customized design that matches the tone of your business. The design will be unique so it will stand out from your competitors plus it will be easier to brand your business. Your Web designer gives you peace of mind because you will receive professional advice, technical support and he’ll suggest effective ways to promote your blog.

Use a WordPress Blog As Your Business Site

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

So you’re interested in using WordPress as your business site – smart move!

But before you dive right in to planning and design you’re decided to do a little research.

WordPress is most commonly known as a blogging platform but it’s grown in popularity as a website platform for both large and small businesses.

Why Use WordPress For Business Websites?

Easy to Install

With a good hosting program you can simply install WordPress with a few clicks.

Easy to Update

One of the features of WordPress is the easy to use visual editor. It’s called a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor. You could compare this type of editor to using Microsoft Word to edit your website as it’s very easy to use and many people catch on to use it quickly.

Plenty of Add-Ons

With WordPress you can get add-ons that increase the functions and change the look of your website. Compared to having customized features added to a site designed specifically for you the cost will be highly reduced.

Customized Look

There are many ways to customize a WordPress website so that it matches your business and branding. You can add your own logo or header, change the background, add your own colors, add links and more.

Built in Blog

What many people who are not familiar with WordPress are unaware of is that you can use the program to create both a website and a blog all in the same spot. This is so much more convenient than having them separate.

Search Engine Friendly

Another great feature of the program is helps you optimize your pages and posts.

Building Community

If you choose to also have a blog on your website you can work on building a community around your website. Writing blog posts that build relationships with your target market is an effective way to build trust and earn more sales in the long run.

Easy To Change

As businesses grow and change so do their website needs. It’s silly to assume that the first website or design you start with will be your last. Most businesses go through a large number of changes. WordPress makes it easy to change your look with themes. A theme is added over top of the content and so when replace a current theme it doesn’t affect your existing posts and pages.

I hope these points will help you decide if using a WordPress blog as a business website is the right choice for you.

Three Critical Design Techniques to Design a Money Making Blog

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

When people go to visit your site, they will already have some ideas about its content based on information provided by the referring source. For example, search engine results may provide a clip of text from your site that includes relevant keywords. In many cases, if the promised information is not delivered within the first page, you can rest assured that potential buyers will simply look for another website. Therefore, the way you structure your blog is extremely important.

Headers and Banners

Today, many webmasters create niche specific different domains in order to keep the content as relevant as possible. This includes rotating banners, or special content headers at the top and bottom of the blog. Surprisingly enough, this does not advance search engine ranking, let alone assure that customers are going to buy from your site.

When it comes to banners, you need to stop and ask yourself three very important questions:

1. When searching for specific information, do you even bother to look at banners, or do you quickly scroll down to find the content?

2. Have you ever clicked away from a page because it took too long for the banners or headers to load?

3. Do you often associate banners at the top of a page with “free” webhosting sites, and therefore, form a mental impression that the site may not be very creditable?

If you answered “yes” to any one of these questions, chances are the majority of site visitors are also thinking the same way. No matter how you look at it, the advice related to creating massive advertising campaigns based on headers is useless, and downright harmful. As a general rule of thumb, you will always be better served by using these areas of your website for sensible sales pitches that can set the tone and the mood of the potential buyer.

Page Loading Speed

There is no question that DSL, satellite,and cable modems are a vast improvement over dial up. On the other hand, many of these services also limit consumer bandwidth usage. As a general rule of thumb, if you page takes too long to load, it may also take up too much bandwidth. Under these circumstances, you can rest assured that potential customers will be annoyed and not want to come back to your site, let alone buy anything from it. While you may want to have a fancy website with lots of frills, you will always be better served by a clean, neat, fast loading website.

The Ideal Number of Columns

When you open a newspaper, you will notice that the text is divided into a number of columns. Many webmasters try to duplicate this effect with their blogs. It is very important to realize that newspapers must make use of every available spot on a printed page. Therefore, when they break up text onto different pages, it makes sense. On the other hand, when you have more than three or four columns on your site, it can create a great deal of confusion. In fact, if your site has five or even six columns, some of them may be inaccessible to visitors with small screens. This problem becomes even pronounced if the browser does not support the vertical scrolling instructions found in the code for your blog. As a general rule of thumb, you should try to your site focused mainly on post and page content.

Today, it is not always easy to draw a balance between a well designed website and one that looks contemporary. For example, if every other webmaster has a site with five or six columns, you may be tempted to clutter up your own site up. On the other hand, if you give it some though, you will soon realize that components such as extra columns and flash banners won’t gain any added value in search engine ranking. At the same time, potential buyers may become frustrated with slow loading pages, as well as ones that do not deliver the desired information. If you have to change design elements, you will be well served by changing logos, menu styles, and other features that will give your blog a contemporary look without sacrificing the functionality of the site.

How to Use the WordPress Admin Page – Posts – WordPress Design

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Blogging is all the rage for businesses today. With more than 115 million blogs, individuals and businesses are jumping on the bandwagon in droves. This article deals with what a “blog post” is and how to create a post using the WordPress blogging platform. If you’re new to blogging, posts are the entries that bloggers usually (but not always) display on their home page.

If you want to create a post on your WordPress blog, follow the directions below. These are the big picture instructions. I will follow them up with some specific details about what needs to be included to improve the look of your post as well as SEO.

How to create a blog post in WordPress

Step 1: Log into the WordPress admin panel for your blog.
Step 2: Click the Posts tab on the upper left side of the screen.
Step 3: Under the Posts tab, click Add New.
Step 4: Add your title and the content of your blog post in the appropriate places.
Step 5: Where applicable, create a category, tags, excerpt, trackbacks, custom fields, and post comment options.
Step 6: Click publish

Easy, right? But there are some things you need to think about as you write that will improve your SEO and help attract visitors.

Keywords – Keywords are the foundation of your blog. Make sure you know your top 3 keywords and that they appear at least once in every post you write.

Post Title – Use your top keyword or keyphrase in every post title. Using the same title twice can cause some errors on your blog and might seem a little “spammy” so avoid doing it.

Post Editing – Don’t forget to highlight your keywords and phrases by bolding them when they appear. Search engines pick up on emphasized text to validate what the author is saying.

Preview – Take a look at your final draft before publishing. You may see a misspelled word or two that needs to be corrected.

Post Tags – WordPress calls post tags “micro-categories for your blog”, similar to including index entries for a page. Posts with similar tags are linked together when a user clicks one of the tags. Add tags to your post. Post tags should be the top 10-15 keywords or phrases that are most important to your blog.

Discussion – The discussion section helps you control reader comments and notification of your posts. If Allowing Comments is unchecked, no one can post comments on the post. If Allowing Pings is unchecked, no one can post pingbacks or trackbacks to the post.

Password Protect This Post - You can also password protect your posts to allow access to only subscribers or members.To password protect a post, click Edit next to Visibility in the Publish area to the top right, then click Password Protected, click Ok, and enter a password. Then click OK.

Once you publish your post, it will appear on your blog or index page and you are ready to go!
